First try at stacking bowls!

Stacking bowls is sometimes a challenge, especially when Johann doesn't like to put his teeth on stainless steel. So we went with plastic bowls, which made for some wackiness.

It took a while for Johann to learn to fetch and put (as we call it)....getting an object and putting it somewhere. But once he got that down, it opened up a whole new world of fun tricks.

For stacking we started with putting a stick, since he loves those, and then progressed to using another bowl.

He got it pretty quickly. Good boy!

Teach your dog a new trick and help the Planet!

March 31st is a big day! At 8:30 PM all over the World people, and dogs, will be turning off their lights for Earth Hour!

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a global grass-roots movement encouraging individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take positive actions for the environment, and celebrating their commitment to the planet by switching off their lights for one designated hour.

This year is a special year for Earth Hour. As part of the "I Will If You Will" challenge, Raise A Green Dog is teaming up with Castor Pollux Pet Works!

If we get 100 dogs to commit to learning how to turn off their lights for Earth Hour, Castor Pollux will donate 1000 meals to dogs in need!

You don't have to be an expert trainer, or an expert trick dog! Just give it your best shot and have some fun! Here's our challenge, watch it if you dare:

If you'd like to help your dog learn how to turn off the lights for Earth Hour and take our challenge, here are two great vids to help teach your dog to turn off the lights, be more eco-friendly, save energy, reduce your carbon pawprint, turn your dog green, and participate in this Worldwide environmental movement:

Putting away toys!

Having your pup put away their own toys is a great trick and comes in very handy at clean up time!

It wasn't as easy as we thought for me to learn this trick. I'm not a 'fetcher'.

One day Mum found I was very, very interested in one of my kittie brother's toys that he had left lying around. I started to carry it around the house with me. That's when she jumped into action.

She started by throwing the toy, then going over to me and running with me toward the basket where she wanted me to put the toy. That got me very interested in 'bringing,' it with me. Then she taught me to 'put it' in the basket and 'dropping it', by putting the treat in the basket. It was much easier for me to learn this way, than other ways we had been trying.

There are lots of different ways to teach 'fetching' and 'bringing' and 'putting' and other tricks. Mum likes to say...just watch and pay lots of attention to your dog and they will give you clues as to how they can best learn tricks. It worked very well for us with this one that we found difficult in the beginning. Have fun!

Turning off the light!

This is one of Gracie's favorite tricks. She's about 20 inches high at the withers, just the size to reach a light switch here in the US.

Here's a video of Mum teaching Gracie to turn off the light switch using clicker training. Mum started with tape on the wall at a lower height for Gracie to target, then moved it up and up until the tape was right on the light switch.

Once Gracie got the hang of moving (flipping) the light switch, she removed the tape and started naming the behavior.

Happy training!

Taking off socks!

If you have a dog that likes to tug, this is a super easy trick to teach. Johann was taking them off in a matter of seconds! Gracie, who isn't the most prolific tugger, picked it up pretty fast too.

When you've mastered that, add a little twist and teach your dogs to do it at the same time!
